CoQ10 (Ubiquinol)

Key points

• CoQ10 is essential for the electron transport chain — mitochondria cannot produce ATP efficiently without it
• Ubiquinol (reduced form) is more bioavailable than ubiquinone — especially important over age 40
• Statin drugs deplete CoQ10 by inhibiting the mevalonate pathway — anyone on statins should supplement
• Declines with age — levels at 70 are roughly half of those at 20
• 100–200mg ubiquinol daily with a fat-containing meal for absorption
